Tapachula College Scholarship Fund

I have been to Tapachula, Mexico twice and have absolutely fallen in love with the place and what Mission on the Move is doing there.   Both of my teenage children have gone at least once with me, and I know for a fact that it has made a difference in their lives.  Steve and Hope have done such a fantastic job with these “young” children that there are now some who “aren’t so young” any more, and are ready for college.  While this church and many others have been supporting Mission on the Move for years, there is no separate fund for college expenses.  That’s what we need to change.  However, we do not want donations to this college fund to take away from the donations to the general fund.

Clay Church has graciously donated $1,000 to get this fund started.  Our goal is to have enough in the fund each year to support one person for a year of college in Mexico.  A typical 'good' college will cost about $8,500 per year, which includes everything.  So this is our goal each year…$8,500.  If a student stays in Tapachula for college and lives at the Mission on the Move home, then expenses will be MUCH less, and we could end up supporting more than one person.

There are two young men who will begin college in the Fall of 2010.

Ulisis has been a STRAIGHT 'A' student his entire career.   Several times he had the highest average in his Class at the end of the school year.  Hi goal is to become an Accountant.  Ulisis is a fantastic soccer player and would love to play soccer in college, but has not had any offers for a scholarship yet.  He will probably go to school in Tapachula and live at the boys home.

Danny has become an 'A' student for the last 3 years and is very helpful and polite.  He has been working in the afternoons at a dental office.  (with Kendy…Faustino & Norma's daughter…who has opened a dental practice in Tapachula)   He has always said he wanted to be a dental assistant but has recently decided to become a full-fledged dentist.

If you feel moved to give to this cause, like my wife and I do, you can do so very easily.  Just write a check to Clay Church and write “Tapachula College Fund” on the memo line.  The money will be sent to Mission on the Move to help their older children get a college education.  The goal is not just to bring up these children to be Christians, but to be able to send them out into their community to be productive citizens.  That helps everybody…and this is a way for us to help from half a continent away.
